“Lucy In The Sky” directed by Noah Hawley (creator and writer of “Fargo” series) is a story about an astronaut, Lucy Cola played by Natalie Portman, who struggles with reality and everyday life after a NASA mission to the moon.
The story is based on the life of former astronaut Lisa Nowak. The film cast is amazing, Dan Stevens (“Downton Abbey”) was convincing as Lucy’s husband. He transformed himself into a role as a good southern, Christian, doting husband.
Then there is the rising star Zazie Beetz (“Joker”) who plays astronaut Erin Eccles and is extremely natural in her character’s role. Jon Hamm(“Mad Men”) plays a very convincing astronaut/womanizer, Mark Goodwin. And the famous Ellen Burstyn (“The Exorcist”) plays Lucy’s rough, chain smoking grandmother.
When I think of Natalie Portman I remember one of her first roles as a young actress in the classic film “The Professional”. Her role in “Lucy In The Sky” is a difficult one.
Portman struggles with the physicality, southern accent, technical lines, and mental decline of Lucy Cola. It was not a convincing portrayal of the character. I wished she could be more natural and not so awkward.
The film does tell a story but the mission went wrong in the writing. I enjoyed watching the cast in the film and learning what a NASA astronaut goes through in order to accomplish a mission to the moon, however, you might want to wait for this one to come out on DVD.
I give this Film 3/10
