Ford V Ferrari” directed by James Mangold (“Logan”, “The Wolverine”, “Walk The Line”, “Cop Land”) is a story about an automotive team led by Caroll Shelby and Ken Miles to create the Ford GT40 under the wrath of Henry Ford II and Lee Iacocca, then racing it in the 1966, 24 hrs of Le Mans, France to challenge Ferrari. Ferrari had won the race the prior 7 out of 8 years.
The race has been dominated by Ferrari, Porsche, and Audi over its history. However, the US Shelby Team surprised the world by suddenly being competitive in 1966. I cannot say enough about this brilliant piece of work.
Matt Damon is outstanding as the automotive designer, Carroll Shelby. Christian Bale will have you glued to the screen as British race car driver, Ken Miles. Tracy Letts as Tom Ford II, Josh Lucas as Leo Beebe, and Jon Bernthal as Lee Iacocca exquisitely portray the ups, downs, and hurdles of working for the Ford Company.
Relationships between characters are believable and touching especially between Ken Miles and his son Peter, Noah Jupe, and his wife Mollie, Caitriona Balfe (“Outlander”). The race car driving scenes will have you on the edge of your seat.
You feel as if behind the wheel from the beginning of the film. “Ford V Ferrari” is a film masterpiece. It is another example of what happens when an amazing, cast, crew, director, and special effects mesh.
It is a definite thumbs up.
