“Joker” , directed by Todd Phillips, where do I begin? I thought about approaching this critique by comparing past genius portrayals of the Joker such as Jack Nicholson, Heath Ledger, Jared Leto, and of course the original Joker himself Cesar Romero but decided not to go that route.
Instead I chose to seek a better understanding as to why Joaquin Phoenix’s version of Joker is so intensely disturbing and will no doubt spark conversation and controversy. “Joker” , 2019 delves into Arthur Fleck’s dark journey and what exactly drives him to become Joker.
It also delves into an extremely difficult and touchy subject, mental illness and society’s ways of dealing with it. Joaquin’s portrayal of this mental illness is so convincing and unpredictable it leaves you disturbingly uncomfortable.
A method actor, Joaquin meticulously prepared for this role in order to embody it. He lost 52 lbs. and studied personality disorders, specifically a book on personality types of political assassins. He uses gestures, a pathological laugh, unexpected dance moves, and clownish/Charlie Chaplin mannerisms.
Scenes with his mother, Penny Fleck played by Frances Conroy, have a slight “Psycho-esque” feel. Zazie Beetz as Sophie Dumond, Joker’s love interest and Robert De Niro as Murray Franklin, a talk show host, reinforce this extremely grim storyline.
I do recommend seeing “Joker” but warn that it might leave you with an uneasy feeling which means the cast, crew, and director were successful in pulling off “Joker” 2019. However, maybe follow the show with some happy music in the car ride home.
I give this Film 8/10
